A toddler has made an incredible recovery after he was accidentally run over by his mother.
Umair Adris was left fighting for life in intensive care after his mother Ayesha accidentally reversed into him a month ago.
The 15-month-old was unconscious and bleeding and suffered a lacerated liver, bruising to the brain, and a fractured femur after he toddled behind his mother's car on their driveway in Middlesbrough.
He spent four days in intensive care and eight days in hospital but is now well on the road to recovery and learning to walk again.
Ayesha, 27, had been taking her three-year-old daughter Aamnah to nursery in Acklam when the accident happened.
The mother-of-two said: 'When I left the house he was playing with his grandad.
'He is so small I didn't see him. He managed to walk behind the electric gate. When I looked behind me he was lying in the road.
'At first I didn't think I had hit him, I thought he had just fallen down.
'But when I picked him up he was unconscious, his right eye was bruised and his ears were bleeding.'
Ayesha called an ambulance, but grandad Mohammed drove his grandson to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Father Noveed, who was at work as an IT officer in the sterile services department of the hospital, rushed down to A&E to be by his son's side.
The 29-year-old said: 'My dad rang me saying there had been a really bad accident. I was upset when I saw him. I was totally shocked - I couldn't believe it.'
Umair was so badly injured that he had to be airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for specialist treatment.
His worried parents followed close behind in a police car.
When they arrived at the hospital Umair had already been admitted into the intensive care unit.
Ayesha, said: 'It was really hard to see him lying down like that.
'It was so scary. There were a lot of worries going through my head.'
Umair's liver was bleeding, and he was kept in hospital in case he needed an emergency operation.
'When they told me about the injuries I thought he is not going to be alive,' said Ayesha.
'And when they said there was bruising on his brain I thought he might be disabled.'
But Umair has stunned everyone with his quick recovery and recently had his cast removed.
Noveed said: 'He is doing really well. He's trying to crawl and he's learning how to walk again.'
Mohammed, 60, said: 'It's a big relief to get him back. He's been very lucky.'
Ayesha added: 'He is a proper handful. I'm not going to leave him alone for one second.'
