Baby girl survives after parents refuse doctors' request to take her home to die

A couple told to take their baby home to die saved their daughter's life after they demanded a second opinion.
Graeme and Kerry Healey were told by doctors in London that nothing could be done for their baby Millie.
But the couple from Gloucester, refused to accept the medical verdict on their beloved baby and insisted on a full review of her case.
As a result, experts in Birmingham decided it was worth operating to try to save Millie's life - and they succeeded.
Now her parents are poised to take her home.

'To go from being told your child has no chance of survival to being where we are now is nothing short of a miracle,' said Graeme.
'We are so grateful to the hospital staff. If it was not for them we would not have our little girl, we would be getting over a funeral instead.'

The couple's emotional roller coaster ride began at Kelly's 20-week scan when tests revealed the baby had hypoplastic left heart syndrome - a congenital condition affecting the left side of the heart.
However, it was not until Millie was born at Bristol's St Michaels Hospital on May 31 that the full extent of her condition became apparent.
She was then transferred to Evelina's Children's Hospital in London where further tests showed she was actually suffering for a much rarer problem called cyanotic univentrical heart.
The cluster of abnormalities included the heart arteries and ventricles being back-to-front, an underdeveloped right side of the heart and problems with the blood vessels going to the lungs.
Doctors say the chances of a child being born with all these problems is a million to one.
Millie's low birth weight of 4lb 15oz created further complications as she was not strong enough to withstand major corrective surgery.
When doctors discovered this, they told Graeme, 41, and Kelly, 38, there was little they could do apart from make her comfortable and provide palliative care.
But the couple, who have seven other children, were determined to fight for their daughter.

They asked for a second opinion at Birmingham Children's Hospital - where they were given hope when doctors agreed to operate.
Since then she has had two major operations to repair the faults and Millie is now out of intensive care and recovering in the cardiac ward.
Although Millie will need more surgery in the future, doctors hope she will be home by the end of summer.
'That will be the perfect moment for us,' said Graeme.
