Manchester United captain Patrice Evra has warned his team-mates they must win the Barclays Premier League to save their reputations after a ‘disaster’ in Europe.
Evra was highly critical when Sir Alex Ferguson’s team exited the Champions League last December.
And France full back Evra did not hold back as he reflected on United’s exit from the Europa League, saying: ‘It is a big disappointment to go out of Europe.
‘From the beginning of this season it has been a disaster, first in the Champions League and now in the Europa League.
‘Now we have to be focused on the Premier League.’
Evra went on to suggest that United were too arrogant in the Champions League after reaching the final in three of the previous four seasons.
‘Maybe we were too confident at the beginning of the Champions League,’ he admitted.
‘Maybe we were thinking we would go through easily and we ended up going out in Basle.‘It’s been a bad season for us in Europe. We don’t deserve to be in the Champions League or the Europa League.’
Defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Thursday meant United only won three European games all season.
In the Premier League though it has been different.
United have won seven and drawn one of their last eight games and head to Wolves tomorrow knowing a victory would put them four points ahead of neighbours City. ‘Of course, I’m not worried by the Premier League. Now we are top and we want to make sure we stay in front,’ added Evra.
‘We have to focus on the League if we want to save the season.’
A win for United would heap pressure on Wolves’ players, who have been told not to leave Molineux by the front door so they avoid being abused by fans.
The club have stepped up security for the game after fans heckled Jamie O’Hara last Saturday, even though he was holding his son.
