Mario mourns 'Lovely' Morosini - City striker's grief at loss of former team-mate

Mario Balotelli has spoken of his shock at the sudden death of Italian midfielder Piermario Morosini and insists the tragedy will teach him to ‘appreciate and respect life’. The Livorno star collapsed and died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Serie B match at Pescara on Saturday.

Balotelli, who played with Morosini in Italy’s Under 21 side, said: ‘He was an absolutely lovely lad. I was shocked when I heard.
I couldn’t believe it and hoped it was just some horrible prank. This makes me reflect on many things in my life. It teaches me to appreciate life, respect it and experience it with caution and dignity.’

Thousands of mourners gathered outside Livorno’s Armando Picchi stadium to pay tribute to the 25-year-old yesterday, as it emerged that Morosini was orphaned at the age of 18 after his parents died two years apart. Shortly afterwards his disabled brother committed suicide, leaving him with his handicapped elder sister and an aunt.
Livorno and Udinese, who loaned Morosini out in January, announced they are planning to provide financial care for his sister.

Morosini fell to the ground in the 31st minute and tried to get back up before collapsing again. Despite desperate attempts to resuscitate him, he never regained consciousness. An investigation has been launched after it was revealed his ambulance was delayed for three minutes outside the stadium because a police car was parked in front of the emergency exit.

There were one-minute silences before yesterday’s Premier League game between Manchester United and Aston Villa and Chelsea and Tottenham’s FA Cup tie.
