Liverpool have agreed to let Torres go for straight cash or a partexchange deal involving Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka, who would be valued at £8m.
Star striker: Liverpool's Fernando Torres scores first in the 2-0 victory against Chelsea |
And if Torres does depart, few at Anfield would miss him. The Spaniard has become a surly, sulking figure in recent months.
One team-mate admitted: 'He has always been admired by his teammates, but not loved.'
Crucially, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is in agreement with American owner John W Henry's strategy and accepts that it is better for the club to sell at the right price than to keep an unhappy player.
Torres has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave for £50m this summer and Liverpool are determined not to get a penny less by selling him now in a deal that would smash the British transfer record, set in 2008 when Manchester City paid Real Madrid £32.5m for Brazilian forward Robinho.
By handing in a formal transfer request on Friday, 26-year-old Torres ensured his departure will not be blamed on Henry and chairman Tom Werner, who bought the club for £300m last autumn.
Torres, a World Cup winner with Spain, has been criticised for his attitude this season, but his desire to join Chelsea is said to have stunned everyone at the club.
Return trip: Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka could be on his way to Anfield |
Liverpool set up a move for Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from Ajax expecting him to partner Torres up front and tactical work at the club last week was in anticipation of a Suarez-Torres strike duo.
Suarez was in Liverpool yesterday for a medical before completing his £23m move.
The exit of Torres would be a sad end to a Liverpool career which promised so much - he scored 65 goals in 91 Premier League starts - but delivered nothing in terms of silverware.
A busy schedule for club and country has led to injury problems and despite signing a £110,000-a-week fouryear contract in 2009, he has rarely seemed happy since.
Significantly, in turning down his transfer request on Friday, the club noted his 'long-term contract' - a clear message to Chelsea that they would have to pay if they wished to acquire their prize asset.
But having accepted that Torres can go, all that is left now is for Abramovich to pay - and that looks a mere formality to happen before tomorrow night's 11pm deadline.
Liverpool turned down Chelsea's initial offer for Torres of £35m plus young striker Danny Sturridge last week and on Friday night turned down the striker's own transfer request.
But any barriers to his departure will be removed once Chelsea meet the asking price.
Chelsea will come back to Liverpool with a package of £38m plus Sturridge tomorrow but Liverpool will demand more cash or Anelka.
Chelsea will be reluctant to lose Anelka and the Frenchman, who played at Anfield under Gerard Houllier, is unlikely to be corralled into a move.
